The Chicago Housing Authority and Habitat enlisted KOO to develop plans for seven underutilized senior housing sites on Chicago’s north and west sides. KOO investigated the viability of adding housing units to the existing properties in order to provide better amenities to current senior housing residents, create new affordable housing units for CHA residents in desirable neighborhoods, and reduce CHA’s environmental impact through sustainable site planning compatible with LEED ND. KOO produced a “pattern book” providing potential developers with a long menu of choices among sustainable site strategies — with everything from constructed wetlands to community vegetable gardens.
